Schumer in Troy to tackle fire department needs

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Senator Charles Schumer was in Troy Monday fighting for local fire departments.

Schumer visited the Central Fire Station in Troy to tell city and fire officials that he is pushing for more funding for some critical grant programs. He wants to boost grant programs that help fund the equipment and staffing fire departments need.

Schumer said the grant programs have been cut recently, and only 22 percent of departments that applied for grants last year actually received money.

“It allows our firefighters to get the equipment they desperately need, but as we know, it is expensive,” he said.

Schumer was also applauded on Monday because with his visit in Troy, he has now visited every county in New York State in 2015. It was something he vowed to do from the first day he was elected, and every year he visits all 62 counties.
