ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The State Department is advising Americans to stay alert while traveling this holiday season due to the increased risk of terrorist threats worldwide.
The alert is meant to keep people informed about the additional security measures in light of recent events internationally.
This applies more so to those travelling country to country.
The state department alert is intended to encourage Americans be aware of the possible, but is not necessarily meant to deter travelers.
We’ve already seen attacks in several countries this year, most recently in Paris and Mali where extremists have targeted sporting venues, theaters and markets.
While ISIS did claim responsibility for the bombing of a Russian airline in Egypt, many times the attacks are carried out by people who are unaffiliated, but inspired by larger groups.
The travel alert runs through the holidays, expiring on February 24.
For those of you who want to stay on top of the latest alerts, the State Department also offers the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program also known as STEP.
