Local trainer being investigated for giving drug to horse

SARATOGA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The State Gaming Commission is proposing new regulations after an investigation into a horse trainer and his assistant.

Steven Asmussen and his assistant Scott Blasi were investigated by PETA after allegations they gave thyroxine to horses 48 hours after they raced during the 2013 meet.

The drug helps with complications associated with the thyroid gland.

The new regulations will require that no drugs be given to horses unless for therapy, only vets may renew drug prescriptions, all unnecessary use of substances that abnormally affect horses will be prohibited, and trainers must keep a log of all dispensed medicine.
