ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A proposal in Albany County to increase the age to buy tobacco and tobacco products came before a public hearing on Tuesday. If passed it would mean you’d have to be 21-years-old to purchase tobacco products.
Already there are several regulations on tobacco products. Right now you can buy a pack locally in New York for an average price of $10, as long as you’re over 18. Those proposing the law say this would keep kids from smoking, but local smoke shops say it will just drive business elsewhere.
Tuesday’s meeting was just a public hearing, so there was no voting on the law. The soonest the proposal could go to a vote would be early December.
