(NEWS10) – Jeremy Wernick has been shaving his head in support of the fight against childhood cancer for the last five years.
Wernick said that meeting some of his friends through Saint Baldrick’s made him realize something simple, but also drastic.
“When it was my second year I realized, wow, your head gets really cold. And every year my mom would make me a hat. These kids have to go through this for quite some time when they go through chemo”, said Jeremy Wernick, creator of Hatsgiving.
And Hatsgiving was then born. Jeremy made a stop by one of the drop off spots to check on donations and he was met with unexpected packages and letters from unknown supporters from far as Pennsylvania.
Hats must be brand new or homemade, and they will be donated to kids at Albany Medical Center. They also recently got a visit from the New York Giants.
“They’re the Breast Cancer awareness hats. These are the fleece hats. These aren’t just hats that you wear, these are the hats where you go to the stadium, you wear these hats to the stadium”, said Wernick.
Last year Hatsgiving collected over one thousand hats. They get calls & emails, sometimes people just walk up and hand them a bag full of hats.
“Honestly, with some people who donated these hats, I don’t really know who they are. But it is nice to know that these people are donating these hats out of pure kindness, they really don’t know who I am”, said Wernick.
