ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Sen. Charles Schumer says that his effort to defeat a proposal to allow longer trailer trucks on the nation’s highways has succeeded.
The Democrat says Thursday that the Senate has removed a legislative provision that would have authorized twin 33-foot trailers. Current rules allow for trucks to pull two trailers that are each 28 feet long. When the length of the cab is factored in the extra-long trucks stretch to 84 feet.
Schumer says the long trailers would have presented a serious safety hazard.
He says it’s good news for motorists throughout the state that the Senate blocked the proposal.
