Sage Men’s Soccer finishes historic season in 2-1 NCAA Loss

CANTON, NY (NEWS10) – Mu’Ammar Camara (New Haven, CT/Eli Whitney) put the Gators up in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Gators lost to #13 St. Lawrence in a trilling 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament.

After 20 minutes of back and forth action, Camara put up a long floater from 40 yards out to chip the Saints keeper and put Sage (13-4-3) up 1-0.

St. Lawrence (15-3-2), the Liberty League Champions, went on the offensive, getting off six unanswered shots, but the Sage defense held strong to hold on 1-0 going into the half.

The Saints got off to an early start with back-to-back corner kicks in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Chandler Short broke TJ Zehner’s (Beacon, NY/Beacon) shutout on the second corner off assists from Harry Copeland and Morgan Smith.

With a little over six minutes left in regulation, St. Lawrence drew a penalty kick on a set piece. Noah Bunton scored the go-ahead goal to put the Saints up 2-1.

With time ticking down on the clock, Sage continued to press forward and battle. With second left on the clock, Sage thought they tied the game on River Seybolt (Sledon, NY/Longwood) goal from Jame Lagunas(Passaic, NJ/Passaic County Technical) on the left side, but play was called offsides. The Saints held on to win 2-1.

St. Lawrence’s Ryan Roethel (15-3-2) was credited with the win while Zehner (13-4-3) picked up the loss on a four save effort.

The Gators ended the season as the first team in program history to advance to the NCAA tournament and win the Skyline Conference.
