COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The family and friends of a young barber killed in Colonie continue to feel a sense of relief after two arrests were made in the case.
Jackie Porreca died after being stabbed in the neck while working alone at the Recycled Salon in August. Police arrested Shawn Moreland, 32, and Michael Chmielewski, 23, for the crime.
Porreca’s aunt, Frances Drabick spoke to NEWS10 via Skype from her home in Maine. She said when she learned of the arrests, she was overwhelmed.
Drabick said all her family wanted was for someone to have compassion and come forward. She was grateful to learn some finally did.
“As I saw their photographs, the one in particular who killed my niece hands on – Michael – he looked like he had remorse in some of those photos, so I was very glad to see that,” she said. “And as far as beyond them and their family, I have tremendous compassion for their families who, you know, again, they’re on the periphery of something horrible just like my family.”
Drabick also wanted to share a message to those who offered tips to police.
“They had a heart,” she said. “They’re my heroes, and if I knew who they were, I’d find them and give them on hell of a hug. I truly would. I’m grateful to them as much as I am to the police. They’re true. They have compassion, and that’s all we ever were looking for as a family is compassion.”
