ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A few firefighters and an Albany police officer are on the scene.
Police say they’re here to make sure that this fire doesn’t flare up again.
They are putting water on hot spots every so often to keep those under control. An extent of the damage is still smoldering 12 hours later.
The fire chief says whatever is still standing of 381 South Pearl Street will come down as soon as possible.
Firefighters say when they got there, flames were shooting from the roof and the windows.
It took them nearly four hours to put the fire out. The second and third floors were vacant, and gutted, causing the fire to spread quickly.
The owner of the building says he believes this had to have been started on purpose.
He says he was inside his store at the time on the first floor when he started to smell plastic burning.
He looked everywhere for fire and didn’t find anything until he went outside and looked up.
