BOLTON LANDING, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Gunfire shattered the serenity of the Lake George community early Tuesday.
Police respond to 911 calls and a local couple was found dead inside their home.
The Warren County Sheriff says it was a murder suicide; a husband killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself, the horrible acts right in front of the couple’s 20-year-old daughter.
Law enforcement says the couple’s daughter ran from the home on Thunderbird Road when her father fired off his weapon. She was able to get help from neighbors who dialed 911.
It was around 8 a.m. Tuesday when the 911 call came in. A woman saying her neighbor’s daughter fled a hail of gunfire inside her parents’ home.
Responding officers surrounded the home at 8 Thunderbird Road and evacuated neighbors.
“We were told that the person doing the shooting threatened to have a shootout with police officers,” Sheriff Bud York told News 10. “We got our emergency response team and we safely went in with our robot.”
After no sign of activity, Warren County deputies and SWAT team members entered the home to find the coupe inside. The wife shot dead and the husband also dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say a high powered rifle was found nearby.
Sources say the couple was 55-year-old David Barnes and 46-year-old Kimberly Barnes.
“We are told that there’s a history of domestic situations within the home,” LT. Steven Stockdale told News 10.
Stockdale said that Kimberly had recently moved out, taking the children with her. But, early this morning she had returned with their daughter.
“They came to the house to handle some routine stuff, get some property, tend to an animal and a dispute arose,” Stockdale said. “We do know that it became volatile very quickly and the end result was a tragedy.”
The Barnes’ have 3 children, police say the younger children were informed of what happened by school counselors and victim’s advocates. They are in custody of grandparents.
