FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The mother of a toddler who died after being found unresponsive in her Kingsbury home has pled guilty to charges connected to the child’s death.
Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan announced on Friday that Rachel Ball pleaded guilty to Criminally Negligent Homicide, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, and Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance.
The plea comes after months of investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Kayleigh Mae Cassell.
Police originally charged Ball and her boyfriend, Joshua Bennett, with drug charges, but investigators believe they gave Kayleigh drugs, which ultimately killed her.
The 13-month old died on or about February 22 inside the Kingsbury home she shared with her mother, Bennett and five other children.
According to an indictment, from the time Kayleigh was born in December 2013, her mother – and eventually Bennett – regularly drugged her with heroin and cocaine.
DA Jordan said hair follicle tests prove the toddler was regularly given drugs.
Ball could be sentenced to 11 to 22 years in state prison.
Bennett is still facing Murder charges.
