Senator calls for housing for homeless vets

WASHINGTON (NEWS10) – There’s a push in Washington to try to help those who wore a military uniform to get them off the streets and into long-term housing.

Sen. Charles Schumer said there are 119 homeless veterans in the Capital Region, and that a bill he’s supporting would have the Veteran’s Administration reach out to the veterans as winter approaches.

“They’d link them up to the vacant apartments for rent in the Capital Region, and they put a roof over their heads, and if the vet needed some help paying the rent in the early moths while they get on their feet the VA would pay,” he said.

Sen. Schumer said the bill would also expand the definition of a homeless veteran to provide more benefits for veterans fleeing domestic violence, sexual assault and other life-threatening conditions in their current housing situation.
