BELLEROSE TERRACE, N.Y. (AP) — Officials have dedicated a Long Island bridge to a Nassau County police officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty three years ago.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/1LLoAw9 ) scores of Nassau police officers attended the unveiling of a sign Sunday morning naming a bridge over the Cross Island Parkway in honor of Arthur Lopez. The bridge is in Bellerose Terrace near where the 29-year-old officer was gunned down in October 2012.
Authorities say Lopez was approaching Darrell Fuller’s stopped car when Fuller shot him in the chest. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Lopez’s mother, 72-year-old Mirella Lopez, says she’s proud of her son and that “all his friends never forgot him.” The bridge was dedicated on what would have been Lopez’s 33rd birthday.
