NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands are expected to gather to memorialize a New York City police officer slain on duty.

Officer Randolph Holder’s funeral is being held Wednesday afternoon at the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York.

Hundreds attended his wake Tuesday, where he was remembered as a humble man who loved his family and had pride in his job.

The Rev. Al Sharpton was supposed to deliver the eulogy, but backed out because he said he didn’t want to create a controversy.

Holder was killed Oct. 20 after responding to a call of shots fired and a bicycle stolen at gunpoint. Authorities say 30-year-old Tyrone Howard shot the officer in the head. He has been charged with murder and robbery.

His attorney says there are missing details in the case.
