According to results published Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, in JAMA Psychiatry, marijuana use among U.S. adults doubled over a decade, rising to almost 10 percent or more than 22 million mostly recreational users, according to government surveys. The trend reflects a cultural shift and increasingly permissive views about the drug, researchers say, noting that other studies have shown increasing numbers of adults think marijuana should be legalized. BURLINGTON, VT (NEWS10) — Could Vermont be the next state to legalize recreational marijuana?

The Vermont Public Health Association is hosting a session at the University of Vermont Medical Center in an effort to expand public and political dialogue on this issue and explore recommendations for the upcoming legislative session.

Lawmakers want to know what kind of impact legalization is having in states that have already passed similar legislation before they move forward.

Organizers say experts will be on hand to share research on the economic and health impacts of legalizing and regulating recreational marijuana.

Attendees should make their way to the Davis Auditorium on Thursday, October 29. Refreshments will be served at 5 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The session is free and open to the public.
