Officials mark hockey home opener and ‘coats’ fund drive

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Hockey returns to Albany Saturday night.

The Albany Devils take on the Portland Pirates at their home opener at the Times Union Center. The doors open at 5:05 p.m.

The Devils play the Pirates Friday night in Portland.

To celebrate the start of the 2015-16 hockey season, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan will go head-to-head in the first ever Albany Devils Zamboni Race on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. on South Pearl Street in front of the venue. The public is invited.

The event also kicks off the mayor’s “Cash for Coats” campaign, a collaboration between the City of Albany, the Albany Devils and Lodge’s Department Store. The program raises money to provide new winter clothing to students in need in the Albany School District.

Fans are asked to make a cash contribution at the Zamboni race or at the home opener.

McCoy will launch “Katie’s Koats” in late November with the Devils, and will accept new or used coats to benefit local homeless veterans and their families.
