HEBRON, West Bank (AP) – Palestinian medics say three Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in clashes between stone-throwers and troops in several West Bank towns.
The clashes took place on what some Palestinian factions had designated as a “day of rage” against Israel.
Another Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli troops after stabbing and wounding one of their fellow soldiers. He was wearing a T-shirt with the word “press,” and had blended in with journalists standing a few feet from soldiers who were firing tear gas at stone-throwers.
The incident heightened concerns among journalists about their safety.
Also today, Palestinians firebombed a site that is revered by some Jews as the tomb of the biblical figure Joseph. The attack was condemned as “irresponsible” by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Tensions and violence have been mounting in recent weeks, in part fueled by Palestinian fears that Israel is trying to expand its presence at a major Muslim-run shrine in Jerusalem. Israel denies it.
