POLL: Do you like Schenectady’s new theme song?

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The city of Schenectady is set to approve a new jingle that will become the city’s theme song.

“Schenectady is the Place to Be” was composed, produced and performed by Schenectady County Community College students and staff. While it’s received some mixed reviews, just about everyone agrees it’s a start at shedding some positive light on the city.

SCCC music faculty member Cliff Brucker always wanted to write a song about his hometown.

“It’s a great time for Schenectady to have a positive song like this,” he said.

Amanda Cuthbert is a Schenectady native and student in the college’s School of Music. She said she was more than happy to belt out the tune.

“I was really impressed with everybody,” she said. “It all came together so great.”

Both Brucker and Cuthbert said the song is all about showcasing the good parts of their city and fighting back against naysayers.

“You hear so many people denigrate Schenectady, and you know, it’s unfair because we’re a great city,” Brucker said.

“There’s so much going on now in Schenectady, and it’s such a great place to be,” Cuthbert said.

People out and about in Schenectady on Tuesday took a listen to the song. Some admitted it was a little silly; however, it was an overwhelmingly positive response.

The song also didn’t cost the city any money, according to Mayor Gary McCarthy, who commissioned the jingle.

“There was no expenditure on behalf of the city,” he said. “And again, it’s part of the educational process at the community college where it got the students to come in and focus on a very specific project and produce a song that today people are singing.”

And its a song they might just keep singing over and over again whether they like it or not.

“I’m pretty sure I sing it in my sleep,” Cuthbert said.

The jingle will be adopted as Schenectady’s official song at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
