NY Giants player fighting MRSA

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NEWS10) – An NFL player is currently battling MRSA.

New York Giants player Daniel Fells is fighting to keep his foot after being hit with the infection.

The 32-year-old has reportedly been in intensive care since Friday. He was first rushed to the hospital on October 2 after his temperature reached 104.

Doctors said the infection set in after a toe and ankle injury.

MRSA is a dangerous staph bacterium that’s resistant to most antibiotics. It’s easily spread where people share equipment making locker rooms a prime breeding ground. Monday morning, the Giants scrubbed their facilities, including their locker rooms and training rooms.

“We dedicated the game to Daniel Fells and his family,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “Thank God we were able to give him the game ball.”

Fells has now reportedly had five surgeries and may need more to save his foot. Doctors are worried the MRSA will spread to his bones and possibly his blood.

Fells told ABC News:

“I am very grateful for the incredible support that I have received from family friends, coaches, teammates and fans. This will not defeat me.”
