New York police: Burned woman’s death an apparent suicide

DEWITT, N.Y. (AP) – Authorities say a woman whose burned body was found on a central New York college campus had bought fuel, a lighter and a gas can at a gasoline station before apparently setting herself on fire.

Police in the town of DeWitt say surveillance footage from the gas station shows the woman making the purchases before her body was found late Sunday morning in a wooded area on the Le Moyne College campus.

Officials say they’re investigating her death as an apparent suicide.

Police say they’ve learned the woman in her 50s had a history of depression and mental illness. Her name hasn’t been released.

Officials say the woman lived near the college located just outside Syracuse but had no affiliation with the college and no relatives in New York state.
