Hunter mistaken for squirrel, accidentally shot in face

SANFORD, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Police say a hunter accidentally shot another in the eye after missing his initial target which was a squirrel.

Police say on September 26 just before 2 p.m. they responded to a Broome County 911 report of a hunting accident on state property off of Marsh Pond Road in the Town of Sanford.

Investigation determined that the hunters were legally hunting squirrels on state land off of Marsh Pond Road.  When 45-year-old Duane Wayman of Binghamton fired his .410 gauge shotgun at a grey squirrel, he failed to observe another hunter who was standing in his line of fire and accidentally shot him.

The other hunter, 50-year-old Andy Patrick of Johnson City was injured by three pellets that struck him near his right eye, right side of his chest and his left shoulder.  He was transported to Wilson Memorial Medical Center for his non-life threatening injuries.

All hunters possessed valid licenses. New York State Environmental Conservation Police also responded to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
