Latest inspections find 4 critical defects on NY oil trains

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Inspectors of crude oil tank cars and railroad tracks in New York report finding four critical defects that required immediate fixes.

Prompted by explosive derailments elsewhere, New York’s enhanced inspection program began in February 2014.

Inspectors examined 445 crude oil tank cars, about 128 miles of track and 66 switches in New York last week.

Considered critical were a track gauge defect and worn tread on a switch transition device found along CSX mainline tracks between Amsterdam and Fonda in the Mohawk Valley.

Critical defects also were found on two guard check gauges, one along CSX tracks between Fonda and Rome in the Mohawk Valley and another along CSX tracks in Marlboro in the Hudson Valley.

They reported finding 91 non-critical defects like loose bolts requiring repair within 30 days.
