DUANESBURG, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Troopers say a pair was arrested after they allegedly stole recyclables kept aside for a local Boy Scout Troop.
But Walton reached out to NEWS10 ABC. She said she wanted to set the record straight.
Walton said she was collecting the cans and bottles to use as extra spending money and didn’t know it was for a fundraiser.
“We thought they were garbage bins,” she said. “It was right next to a big garbage dumpster, so we had no idea it was for the Cubs, Boy Scouts or anything, because if it was for that we would have never even took them.”
Local Cub Scout Pack 105 leader Lorraine Moyer said she wasn’t surprised because this wasn’t the first time someone allegedly stole from her group.
“Well, we hope that this can stop; that the people that do donate continue to donate and that perhaps people will keep their eyes open a little more for when people are coming by and possibly stealing from us,” she said. “This is extremely important. It helps us to put on a really great quality program for the boys at little or no cost.”
Both Walton and Normington maintain their innocence and say they didn’t have any bottles in their vehicle.
Cub Scout 105 hopes the community will continue to donate their bottles and cans.
