NEW YORK (NEWS10) – The former prison seamstress accused of helping two inmates escape from a Northern New York prison spoke about her involvement.
Joyce Mitchell sat down with “Today Show” host Matt Lauer on Monday to talk about her role in helping David Sweat and Richard Matt break out of Clinton Correctional Facility in June.
Mitchell said she was going through depression and let her feelings get the best of her. She said she initially had no idea they were going to escape. But when they let her in on the plan, they threatened to kill her family if she talked.
“But I give them the stuff because they had threatened,” she said. “It was Mr. Matt. He looked at me one day and said, ‘You know, Joyce, I do love you.’” And I said, ‘I love my husband.’ And a little while after that, he wanted to get rid of [my husband].”
Mitchell reached a plea deal and is set to be sentenced September 28.
