Former Queens assemblyman sentenced to federal prison

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Former Queens Assemblyman William Scarborough has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison with two years of supervised release.

Scarborough admitted submitting at least $40,000 in false expense vouchers, saying it was for travel to Albany when it was used for personal expenses.

He did this for a period of more than four years, and authorities claim he cost taxpayers more than $54,000.

Because of this scandal in May, the New York Assembly issued a policy to make sure lawmakers are actually in Albany when travel expenses are claimed.

Scarborough will likely have to pay restitution and donate the rest of his campaign funds. He apologized and said he was sorry to his community, family and constituents.
