K-State lockdown lifted; classes to resume Friday morning

MANHATTAN (KSNT) — A lockdown issued for Kansas State University Friday morning has been lifted after police received a report of a possible gunman on the campus.

Vice President of Marketing and Communications Steve Logback says students as well as all employees will return to normal operations.

At about 2:15 a.m. Riley County Police says they received at least three reports of males approaching pedestrians on foot and demanding their property. RCPD says in two of these incidents the suspects were armed with a weapon.

A lockdown was issued on the K-State campus as officers were involved on a foot chase of a possible suspect who last seen running on the campus.

“The University Police took action to ensure the safety of everyone on campus, from a security perspective, there was coordination with the Riley County Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol. All law enforcement agencies involved did everything that was necessary in order ensure the safety of everyone on campus and anyone that might come onto campus. We needed to ensure there wasn’t a threat.” said Logback.

University officials issued the alert encouraging students to stay indoors. The campus was put on lockdown, encouraging faculty and staff to stay away until further notice.

K-State Police says classes and business will resume at 9:30 a.m.

“We always want to make sure safety is of the up most importance and that we take every precaution, in order to make sure everything is safe and secured before we allow students and staff to proceed with the day.” said Logback.

RCPD says at this time they are continuing to investigate these incidents and that it does appear the suspect(s) have left the immediate area.

Manhattan Christian College was on lockdown Friday morning as well and will resume classes and business at 9:30 a.m.

KSNT News will update as additional information becomes available.
