DUANESBURG, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Friends and loved ones gathered Friday night to remember a mother and daughter killed in a car crash in Schenectady County.
Summer Penny, 14, and her mother, 35-year-old Vanessa Cohn, were both killed in a car crash Wednesday evening. The two, along with Penny’s grandmother 56-year-old Betty Brockhum, were headed northbound on Route 30 in Duanesburg, according to police.
Authorities said 27-year-old Joseph Duffy was driving southbound when the cars collided head-on.
“Just imagining her crashing in the car, and my heart dropped when my brother told me,” classmate Devon Just said.
Just and Penny would have been freshman in high school when class begins next week. In a statement, the Duanesburg Central School District expressed great sadness and said it would have counselors on hand.
“She was a really nice person, and she had a really big heart and a really big smile,” Just said.
Brockhum is in Albany Medical Center in critical condition. Duffy was also taken to Albany Med and is in stable condition.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
