Watervliet teacher facing allegations of misconduct with a student

WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) – School is just days away from starting, and a local district is taking a hit once again.

The Watervliet School District Superintendent confirms a high school teacher has resigned amid allegations of misconduct with a student.

The now-former Earth Science teacher, Patrick Canniff, was arraigned Tuesday morning on a charge of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a misdemeanor.

For six years, Canniff was a teacher at Watervliet Junior Senior High School. He was also a junior varsity baseball coach.

Watervliet Schools Superintendent Dr. Lori Caplan said New York State Police contacted her last week to say an arrest was pending. She said Canniff resigned on Thursday.

Caplan said she has not been informed of the details of the arrest.

“I can’t even guess because I don’t know the details of this investigation,” she said. “All I know is that the result was an arrest.”

Caplan said she does not know if the investigation has anything to do with the recent arrest of School Liaison Officer Joshua Spratt who is accused of having sex with two Watervliet high school students.

“It’s very obvious that there are adults making really bad decisions,” Caplan said. “And by no means do those adults represent the district, the teaching staff, or the teaching profession for that reason. I think our mission now is and our goal is to, you know, acknowledge, heal, and we need to move on.”

A letter was sent to parents. Caplan is urging any parents who have concerns to contact her.

Caplan said the district will continue to work with authorities, although she believes the investigation is close to ending.
