2 hospitalized after boat explodes, catches fire at Fischers Marina

KATTSKILL BAY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Several crews responded to Fischers Marina for a boat explosion and fire.

Around 6:52 p.m. Tuesday, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a boat explosion just off of Fischers Marina in Pilot Knob. The marina is located on the east side of Lake George.

Authorities said a man had just finished filling his boat with fuel when it exploded. First responders said an employee at the marina jumped into action and helped get the owner off the boat and back to shore.

Authorities said the boat owner suffered serious burns, was rushed to the hospital, and airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The employee was also burned but not as severely.

Their conditions are unknown.

First responders say it’s unclear what caused the explosion.

“We know that whenever you fill a boat with fuel, that’s a good chance you’ll get fumes that build underneath the deck of the boat, and that’s why there’s a special blower under there that takes the fumes out before you turn the key to start it,” Warren County Fire Coordinator Brian Leflur said. “And I’m not sure exactly what procedure happened, but that’s when it blew up.”

Authorities said the marina owner Nick Cutro also intervened. The boat was still on fire and drifting toward some nearby docks.

Authorities confirm Cutro corralled the boat onto a nearby reef. Firefighters then put a plume around it to prevent any fuel from leaking into the lake.

The boat remained at the reef Tuesday night.

“My first indication was to help anybody who may have been hurt or if there was somebody still on the boat,” Cutro said.

Authorities have not identified either of the victims. They also have not determined what caused the explosion.
