Wall disappears in Rotterdam after Craigslist ad posted

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A mystery is brewing in Rotterdam over who took a small stone wall.

It all started on Saturday when Christine Daniel posted an ad on Craigslist for a box of free items. There was also a sign placed outside that said the items were free.

The box was sitting on top of a stone wall built by the homeowner 50 years ago. Daniel said she was trying to get rid of her microwave, a few good books and bunch of DVDs.

But Daniel said when she went to mow the lawn on Sunday, the wall was gone.

“We were both flabbergasted,” she said. “Like did we both dream this? Is my vision bad?”

The stones were dug up from the ground leaving behind a wall of dirt.

“The neighbors said they did see somebody here, like, two o’clock in the afternoon,” Daniel said.

Neighbors said the person had a landscaping truck, so they didn’t think anything of it at the time. Now, Rotterdam police are wondering who lifted the wall in broad daylight.

“Funniest part to me, they took the wall and left the box of free stuff,” Daniels aid.

Daniel believes someone misinterpreted the ad and thought the wall was free, too. Now she wants the stone wall back because it has more sentimental value than anything else.

“It definitely won’t be as cute with the wall and Spanish bungalow,” she said.

She even posted another Craigslist ad asking for the person to return it with no questions asked.

Now, the self-described Craigslist junkie, said she will be more careful the next time she posts an ad.

“Be careful how you word it, and maybe, you put stuff all the way at the curb,” she said.

Daniel said her box of stuff will remain outside until, and her landlord will not replace the wall.

Police said they believe two white males drove up in two pickup trucks. One was described as red and the other was described as black in color.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (518) 355-7397.
