WWI vet posthumously receives Purple Heart

A local World War I veteran may no longer be with us, but his service has certainly not been forgotten.

Owen Soraghan, Sr. served with the United States Army in Europe. He died at 49-years old.

On Friday, Congressman Paul Tonko presented his son, Owen Soraghan, Jr., with his Purple Heart.

“It’s never too late to say thank you, and we can’t say it frequently enough,” Tonko said. “And while we do it posthumously, we echo those sentiments so they are shared with his son and daughter-in-law; with his granddaughter and grandchildren.”

Tonko worked with the veteran’s family to secure the medals. Along with the Purple Heart, Soraghan was also awarded a World War I Victory medal and button.
