BENNINGTON (August 11, 2015, 4:30PM) – The Town of Bennington needs the public’s help with finding over 30 street signs that have gone missing over the past few months.
According to the town highway superintendent, RJ Joly, the theft of the signs began in May and has continued consistently week after week. While a majority of the signs have been taken from rural residential areas, signs in the commercial and downtown districts have also gone missing. “It’s not uncommon for a few signs to go missing throughout the year, but this is definitely excessive and it’s costing the Town in money and labor” Joly said.
Each sign costs approximately $100, making the total cost to the tax payers of roughly $3,000. The streets impacted the most by this theft include Houghton Lane, Vail Road and Silk Road.
Individuals with information regarding the stolen signs are encouraged to call the Bennington Police Department at 802-442-1030 or the Bennington Crime Tip Line at 802-445-3937.
