SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Saratoga native is returning to his roots and bringing his stable to the Spa for the first time in almost a decade.
For years, Chuck Simon had been a summer regular where he grew up. Around the turn of the century, he earned 67 top-three finishes from 166 starters at Saratoga, including 21 winners.
After pursuing other interests in the racing business, Simon has refocused on training horses. And though his stable is small, he said he has a trio of thoroughbreds who fit in with the competition at the track.
“I have one horse who’s New York bred, and they have plenty of races for those,” he said. “And two other horses who I think will be really competitive here, and one of the owners is local and we decided to take a shot and see if we measure up.”
The New York-bred Oklahoma Den and his filly Killer Bird are both entered into races this week.
Simon said he’s planning to build his stable by claiming some horses during the meet.
