AUSTIN (KXAN) — A final vote today decides if Boy Scouts of America will continue to ban openly gay Scout Masters.
The policy was put in place during the 80’s. Since then openly gay adults were forbidden from leading boy scout troops.
The National Executive Committee unanimously voted to overturn this policy at the beginning of July. Now the fate of the Scouts is left in the hands of the board who still needs to approve the new resolution.
Local Boy Scouts are staying out of the debate by not taking a definitive stance on the issue. They said local troops will continue to follow the national rules set in place.
Under the new resolution religiously sponsored troops will still have the liberty to choose leaders based on their own beliefs.
