Runaway rail car hits vehicle, bumps locomotive into station

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) – Officials are investigating what caused a rail car to roll for more than a mile, hit a car and bump an antique steam engine into an upstate New York train station.

The New York, Susquehanna and Western rail car was parked in Utica when it somehow started rolling at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente tells the Observer-Dispatch of Utica officials are investigating whether the runaway train car was tampered with when it was set in motion. He says the brake lever was released by someone and it appears this “was not something that just happened on its own.”

A 23-year-old man suffered a cut to his wrist when the rail car hit his vehicle.

No one was in the part of the building that was hit.
