VALHALLA, N.Y. (AP) – Four more inmates at the Westchester County Jail, for a total of six, have been charged in connection with an outbreak of drug overdoses behind bars.
County police spokesman Kieran O’Leary says the number of prisoners sickened has risen to 13 since July 12. He says all have recovered and are back at the jail.
He says preliminary testing indicates the overdoses were caused by a form of synthetic marijuana. O’Leary says the affected inmates showed symptoms ranging from being combative to being catatonic.
The prisoners who have been arrested are charged with promoting contraband. Drugs or drug implements were found during an overnight sweep of the 1,100-inmate jail in Valhalla.
Police and jail officials are investigating how the drug got into the jail. Visitation rules are being scrutinized.
