COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — One of the Capital Region’s oldest and most sacred places, has become the victim of vandals.
Colonie Police tell NEWS10ABC the crime includes a large headstone and one prominent mausoleum inside the Albany Rural Cemetery. Colonie Police say it was desecrated when someone spray painted it with an offensive slur, part of which we had to blur out.
The mausoleum serves as a focal point in the section where Tara Mitchell’s Departed family members are buried.
“I have both a mom and a sister buried here and if they did that to them, I would be so hurt. I’d be really, really upset. So this family has every right to be upset and hope that the find the individuals who did it,” said Tara Mitchell.
The cemetery’s caretaker says he has contacted the living relatives connected to the monuments and police say the vandalism likely happened on Saturday or Sunday.
