Vermont officer responding to crash charged with DUI

BETHEL, Vt. (AP) – A Vermont volunteer firefighter who responded to a crash involving serious injuries has been charged with driving under the influence.

Authorities say 66-year-old James Hart – a Bethel volunteer firefighter – responded to a crash Tuesday after a New Hampshire driver crossed the center line on Camp Brook Road and struck a motorcyclist and his passenger.

They say 22-year-old Gustavo Chang of Manchester, New Hampshire, struck a motorcycle driver by 74-year-old Dale O’Keefe of Madison, Wisconsin. Keefe’s left foot was severed in the crash. His passenger’s leg was severed leg.

The Burlington Free Press reports ( ) that a roadside test showed Hart had a blood alcohol content of .104. He is due to appear next month in superior court in Hartford.

A phone listed to Hart has been disconnected.
