SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) – An opera based on a western New York veteran’s experiences as a bomb disposal expert in Iraq is having its world premiere this week at an upstate theater.
“The Long Walk” hits the stage Friday night at the Little Theatre at Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs.
The new opera is based on a 2012 non-fiction book of the same name written by Brian Castner of the Buffalo area. Castner is an Air Force veteran who served in an explosive ordnance disposal unit that defused roadside bombs in Iraq.
His war memoir described his harrowing experiences and the difficulties he faced while readjusting to civilian life.
The opera is being produced by the New York City-based American Lyric Theater. Other performances are scheduled for July 13, 17 and 25.
