Grilled cheese cafe opens up in Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A new restaurant specifically featuring grilled cheese has opened in the city.

Officials are welcomingCapitol Melts’ Grilled Cheese Café to Wellington Row with a grand opening celebration on Tuesday. The place is open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch, the menu features gourmet grilled cheese melts, salads, pizza, and desserts.

Owner Robert Haggerty knew he wanted to run the café in downtown Albany, and after two years of searching for the right space, noticed the listing for 136 State Street on the Downtown Albany BID’s website. Even having seen the space before renovations were complete, he says he knew Columbia Development’s Wellington Row revitalization was just what he was looking for.

Capitol Melts serves up a twist on the classic with 15 unique varieties including Maple Sunrise, Glazed Donut Sliders, Red Pepper Pesto & Spinach, Chipotle Habanero, Mac & Cheese, and Wingless Buffalo. Using premium ingredients sourced locally as often as possible, there is no grease or frying at Capitol Melts; foregoing the grill, Haggerty’s sandwiches are cooked in a high-tech oven.

Located at 136 State Street, Capitol Melts is open 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
