LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – After months of development, new life is coming to the Latham Circle Mall.
Walmart let NEWS10 ABC take a tour of the new store on Wednesday. The new building is moving from Latham Farms, and it’s one of several big changes coming to the Circle as the town revamps the area.
People have been working around the clock stocking shelves and checking inventory to get the store ready for its grand opening.
Manager Juan Rivera is overseeing it all.
“Right now it seems like we’re on track to be open,” he said.
Along with keeping things on track, he’s also still running what will soon become the old Walmart.
“As soon as we are ready to go here, the other one will shut down,” he said.
The new Walmart is nearly twice the size of the Latham Farms store.
“So we’re going to have fresh produce, fresh bakery, a deli opening,” Rivera said. “It’ll be stuff we didn’t have in our previous store here in Latham.”
Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan said the new store may be open by July 15. Mahan said people have wanted to see change around the busy traffic circle ever since she’s been in office.
“The first thing I heard when I got here is, ‘When are we going to do something about Latham Circle Mall?’” she said. “I know before that it just kept going on for quite a while, and it was just deteriorating.”
More change is coming to The Shoppes at Latham. Not only is Walmart moving, but Burlington Coat Factory is planning to move in as well.
“There’s been rumors of fitness,” Mahan said. “Things like that. So I think it’s going to be a variety.”
But what does it mean for business at Latham Farms now that more stores are leaving. Especially since there’s still no word on who will take over Walmart’s old location.
“I don’t think Latham Farms is in danger of becoming obsolete,” Mahan said. “We are one of the towns that have had an economic boom. Everyone wants to be in town of Colonie.”
