Nisky senior to head to Fla. to begin MLB career

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Niskayuna senior is about to make his way to Florida to begin his baseball career.

Just over two weeks ago, the Tampa Bay Rays took Niskayuna’s Garrett Whitley with the 13th overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft. Now, the Silver Warrior is days away from heading to Florida to begin his career.

Whitley said he will begin his trip to Tampa on Monday, sign his contract with the Rays organization on Tuesday, and report to his new team on Wednesday. He will receive a $3 million signing bonus.

Once he puts his signature on the deal, Whitley will join the Rays’ Gulf Coast League Club.

“I’m unbelievably excited,” he said. “It’s been a lifelong dream, and now the signing of the contract is so close. It’s amazing. I’m 18 years old, and I’ve dreamt this for so long, and now it’s gonna happen.”

Whitley said his entire family is going to Tampa to help him get settled in.
