DANNEMORA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Spurred on by fresh evidence, law enforcement officers have methodically combed through heavy woods in Franklin County, trying to close in on two murderers who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility more than two weeks ago.
Authorities have been focusing their search near Owls Head and Mountain View after DNA evidence showed they were likely in a hunting cabin there. That’s about 20 miles west of Clinton Correctional.
Roadblocks are in place around those areas and officers are going through the rugged woods and also going door to door, urging residents to be vigilant.
Meanwhile, we’re hearing from the husband of the prison worker accused of helping Matt and Sweat in their escape plans.
Lyle Mitchel, the husband of Joyce Mitchell says he did not know of the plot until the day after they escaped. He said he also got another piece of news that day: at least one of the two escapees wanted to kill him.
“They gave her a little attention, she said, and it went too far. He tried to kiss her a couple of times. She said no. she said then, that’s when he started to threaten her on things,” said Mitchell, Joyce’s husband.
Lyle also said Joyce has denied allegations of a sexual relationship with one or both of the inmates. He added that he believes what his wife has told him, but he’s not sure he can stand by her.
Joyce Mitchell’s lawyer could not be reached, for response to her husband’s remarks.
