Georgia resident charged for allegedly stealing over $200k in NYS pension benefits

Richard Cook, 57

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A man living in Georgia has been charged with stealing over $200,000 in pension payments from the state retirement system.

The prosecution claims his mother, who was signed up to receive that pension died back in 2009.

Prosecutors say that didn’t stop 57-year-old Richard Cook the 3rd from continuing to take money from a joint account he held with his mother.

Officials say Cook served as executor of his mother’s estate and he never notified the retirement system of his mother’s death.

Cook was extradited to Albany and arraigned on a grand larceny charge Friday.

He has pleaded not guilty.
