LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A special celebration is planned in Latham Friday, to honor the army’s 240th birthday.
Sunday marks 240 years since what’s considered to be the birth of the modern army. On Friday there will be a celebration by the New York Army National Guard at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters.
Keeping with tradition, the celebration will feature a cake cutting. The oldest soldier present and the youngest soldier present will cut the cake to represent the past and future of the army.
That will be followed by a retirement ceremony for Air National Guard Major General Verle Johnston. It all starts at 2 p.m. Friday.
