Search for New York prison escapees enters its fifth day

DANNEMORA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The search for two dangerous convicts has now moved into its fifth day.

There is heavy police presence at Clinton Correctional Facility. Road blocks are on in place surrounding the facility

State police say the focus for them on Wednesday will be on searching homes in the village of Dannemora. They said that it is not based on any new lead, rather law enforcement is looking to retrace the steps it made earlier in the investigation.

“We need to find these escapees,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “They are dangerous men. They are killers; murderers. There’s no reason to believe they wouldn’t do it again.”

Late Wednesday afternoon, Cuomo was joined by the Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin to say they’d be working together.

“Although we don’t know where they are or where they’ve gone, that there’s some indication that one of their destinations, the destination they might have indicated is the state of Vermont,” Shumlin said.

On Tuesday, more than 400 officers searched the farms and fields of Willsboro, which is about 40 miles from the prison. They searched the area based on a tip, but the two fugitives were not found.

Neighbors said there was a strong police presence by the Essex ferry.

“We don’t know that they’ve left the state or that they’ve left the area,” NYS Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said. “We take it just as serious to search the area around here as Willsboro as Vermont area or anything else.”

Now Richard Matt and David Sweat have been on the run since Friday evening or early Saturday morning. Authorities say they had help but are declining to say much more.

State police say those that live in the area can go about their normal routines, but if they see something suspicious, they’re urged to call authorities.

For the female prison employee who may have helped them escape, authorities said they’re questioning her as well as the hundreds of others that work at the prison.

But Cuomo said the first priority is getting the two fugitives into custody and then determining how their escape happened.
