American Pharoah wins Triple Crown

ELMONT, N.Y. (NEWS10)– It was sports history 37 years in the making: American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.

American Pharoah cemented his legacy in the history books as the 12th Triple Crown champion Saturday afternoon at the Belmont Stakes. He’s the first horse since 1978 to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Trainer Bob Baffert has tried his hand before, with three former Triple Crown hopefuls who fell short. He said American Pharaoh has been a dream come true, “You know when he turned for home, I was just like I can’t believe this is happening. I wanted to feel it with those other horses… And I really wanted to win it.”

Jockey Victor Espinoza is also living out his redemption story after two failed attempts to complete the Triple Crown. He has a great respect for American Pharoah. He said, “It’s like driving a fast car when the others are slow ones. He’s just a special horse since the first time I rode him.”

Special turned into all-time great in front of 90,000 people.

Owner Ahmed Zayat said, “We all wanted it. We wanted it for the horse. For the fans.”

Bob Baffert also expressed how it was to share the moment with so many fans, “I think what the triple crown is about is we get to share somebody’s greatness with everybody that got to see it.”
