Downtown Albany celebrates National Doughnut Day

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Friday is National Doughnut Day.

Celebrations and promotions are being offered from two downtown Albany retailers: Cider Belly Doughnuts and Dunkin Donuts. Cider Belly will be giving away mini doughnuts and samples of their new doughnut sundaes today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Samples will be based on a first-come first-serve basis and limited to one sample per customer.

Dunkin Donuts will be offering free donuts with any beverage purchase, featuring their new cookie flavored ice coffee and coolata drinks.

According to Time magazine, National Doughnut Day began in 1938 by the Chicago chapter of the Salvation Army to raise awareness for the organization and to recognize the women who volunteered to make doughnuts during World War I for soldiers overseas.

In downtown Albany, the two doughnut shops are located on North Pearl Street with Cider Belly Doughnuts at 25 N Pearl Street and Dunkin Donuts at 39 N Pearl Street.
