COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The town of Colonie has raided a home on Central Avenue for numerous code violations.
When officials raided the home Wednesday morning, they found electrical problems and no smoke detectors.
Colonie officials said most of those living at 1278 Central Ave. were Asian immigrants. Some of them worked at the nearby Asian market.
Colonie Town Attorney Mike Maggiulli said the building department alerted them to the home. They’d noticed the newspaper in the windows and all the people coming and going.
“We’re going to close this down,” Maggiulli said. “And by the end of the day, everyone is going to have to be out of the first floor. They’re going to have to find other places to live.”
According to town records, the owner of the building is 1278 Realty, LLC. It’s based in New York City. Maggiulli said he spoke with the owner – a man named Ken – who declined to give his last name.
Maggiulli said the man has been cooperative. Those at the Asian market said there was no one available to speak to.
Neighbors, though, were glad the town stepped in.
“We called about stuff like the grass,” neighbor John Fernandez said. “Not about the people and everything because we didn’t know anything could be done about the people.”
There’s also a family that lives on the second floor. The town said the conditions on the second floor were much better.
The owner will now have to answer to the code violations in court, which is scheduled for June 10.
