ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A crackdown on illegal online gambling is paying off for local law enforcement and prosecutors.
Local areas will be receiving millions of dollars in asset forfeitures. An illegal gambling operation at the Albany County Jail that involved corrections officers was part of a larger operation that generated millions of dollars in illegal profits across the country.
Now, nearly $10 million of that has been seized and will be distributed to multiple agencies, including more than $4.5 million to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.
“Asset forfeiture plays an important role in the fight against crime,” U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian said. “Stripping criminals of illegal profits deprives them of the fuel that sustains their illegitimate enterprises.”
“Help us to continue to investigate crime,” Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said. “It will help us with surveillance equipment, some vehicles, and keep things off the county budget.”
Sheriff Apple said the funds will help recoup expenses from that investigation and some will go to non-profit organizations such as outreach programs to help deal with the heroin epidemic.
